Learn MoreWhat we tell Studio City owners
Studio City calls to Homesure often begin with a smell. A fireplace that has not been lit since spring can give off a sharp, smoky odor on a hot day, and people want to know if that means trouble. Usually it points to soot and creosote sitting in the flue, and a sweep sorts it out. We look first and tell you which it is. The 1994 Northridge earthquake shook brick chimneys all across the Valley, and a crack from back then can still be sitting inside a flue today. If we see one, we say where it is, show you the photo, and tell you plainly whether it needs work before the next fire or can be watched.
What We Look at First
The flue, for soot and creosote. Then the crown and flue tiles on older brick chimneys, for old earthquake cracks.
What Cannot Wait
Glazed creosote in the flue, a flue tile with a gap, or a crown cracked open to the weather.
What Can Wait
A light smoky smell from normal soot, a sticky damper handle, small stains on the firebox brick.

We also go to Sherman Oaks, Encino, Toluca Lake.
