Learn MoreWhat we tell Glendale owners
Glendale has a lot of older brick chimneys, and a call we often get from there is from someone who just moved in. They want to know if the fireplace is usable. We look at the firebox, the damper and the flue, then tell you in everyday words: light it, sweep it first, or do not light it until something is fixed. Brick chimneys built before modern seismic rules can crack near the roofline in an earthquake, and the Northridge quake in 1994 showed that across the region. A crack can sit inside the flue where only a camera sees it. If we find one, you get a photo and a plain answer about how soon it matters.
What We Look at First
The firebox, the damper, and the flue tiles, with a camera if the brick is old.
What Cannot Wait
Gaps in the flue tiles, loose brick near the top of the chimney, a damper rusted shut.
What Can Wait
Old soot stains on the face, a hearth tile that is chipped, a cap that is old but still whole.

We also go to Burbank, La Crescenta, Eagle Rock.
